Join The Neighborhood, Tkiya, and friends for a warm and festive Chanukah celebration at Brooklyn Brewery! Together we’ll enjoy music, movement, a puppet show, latkes, crafts and more! This program is presented in partnership with PJ Library, B'nai Brooklyn, and The Greenpoint Shul.

Tkiya will lead their signature blend of songs and interactive Jewish learning, alongside Shabbi and Alyssa, two veteran NYC puppeteers of the Central Park Swedish Cottage, bringing a silly puppet-filled story-time performance of the classic Chanukah children's book, Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins.

This program is best-suited for kids age 0-6 and their families.

Carla Friend

Carla Friend is the Founder and Executive Director of Tkiya: The Jewish Community Music Initiative. She holds a Masters Degree in Music Education from NYU, a Bachelors Degree in Music Education from Ithaca College, and has extensive experience on both the teaching and administrative ends of the field. She has taught and researched music and dance across a variety of cultures including locations such as Uganda, Japan, and the Middle East. Carla’s passion lies in community music education and connecting with culture through music and dance. She started Tkiya to help others find their unique connection with Jewish culture and to reinvigorate diverse Jewish communities.

Alyssa Parkhurst

Alyssa Parkhurst is an actor and puppeteer based in Brooklyn. Recent credits include: The Dandelion's Wish (Skylark Art Studio, dir. Fatima Sambo Schoenfelder), The Last Grain of Rice (Hott Lettis Productions, dir. Hannah Marie Pederson), Hold that Thought (Hybrid Movement Lab, dir. Maks Turner), The Chairs (From Shakespeare to Gaza, dir. Logan Schulman). She is a graduate of The New School College of Performing Arts class of 2023. Shabbi

Shabbi Sharifi is a multi-disciplinary artist based out of Brooklyn, NY. Shabbi is an actor, writer, and puppeteer. With extensive experience in shadow puppets, marionettes, and hand and rod puppets, Shabbi also builds puppets and teaches puppet-building. Additionally, she manages teaching artists, works in marketing & communications, and loves to bring people together to feed them. Shabbi does lots of work and is involved in lots of things.
