Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, 58 7th Avenue
Following their 2020 and 2021 albums of original Yiddish labor songs, Ty Citerman’s Bop Kabbalah+Voices premieres a new Yiddish song cycle about climate justice. Featuring the dynamic and wildly inventive vocalists Sara Serpa and Judith Berkson, this concert will also include guest percussionist Shayna Dunkelman alongside Citerman’s guitar and electronics work. This concert is presented by the Neighborhood with Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, and is sponsored, in part, by the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, administered by Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC).
Ty Citerman is a Brooklyn, NY-based guitarist and composer who makes music across the spectrum of jazz, rock and contemporary classical. He is an active freelancer and improviser in the contemporary NYC music scene. His project Bop Kabbalah explores the juxtaposition of original composition, improvisation and Jewish musical traditions. Its trio incarnation, Bop Kabbalah+Voices (with Sara Serpa and Judith Berkson) released two recordings of original Yiddish labor songs on Infrequent Seams, which Eyal Hareuveni (in Salt Peanuts) called “inspiring and moving…beautifully arranged and delivered.” Bop Kabbalah’s quartet premiered on Tzadik Records in 2014, and JazzTimes called the album “…one of the year’s most arresting recordings…” Ty is a founding member of the irreverent quartet Gutbucket, which has released six recordings and toured across the US and Europe. Guitar Player called Ty’s music “kinetic punk jazz opuses” that “reveal an explosive concoction containing lethal doses of Ornette Coleman, King Crimson, John Zorn, Black Sabbath, Stravinsky, and Fugazi.”
