Join The Neighborhood and musical guests Daphna Mor and The Shul Band for a holiday Klezmer brunch concert over bagels and jelly donuts.

This family-friendly event will bring together an all-star group of Jewish musicians to get us into the Chanukah spirit. Daphna Mor will lend her virtuoso recorder playing and vocals to The Shul Band’s high energy sound. They will collaborate on Klezmer songs, Sephardic grooves, Chanukah specials, and more. Special guests TBA.

Praised as a ‘Recorder virtuoso’ and for her “astonishing virtuosity” by The New York Times and The Chicago Tribune, musician Daphna Mor has performed as an instrumentalist and vocalist throughout Europe and the United States both as a soloist and ensemble player. Recent solo appearances include Tanglewood festival, Lincoln center, the Met Museum in New York, and St Martin’s in the Fields in London with Apollo’s Fire Orchestra. As member of the orchestra, Mor performed with The New York Philharmonic, American Classical Orchestra, New York City Opera and Orchestra of St. Luke’s to name few. She has appeared in a duo with Joyce DiDonato on the singer’s album tour for In War and Peace and can be heard on Sting’s album If On A Winter’s Night for Deutsche Grammophon. Mor is an acclaimed interpreter of Sephardic Music, and co leads the Global Music ensemble East of the River together with Nina Stern. Their new album Ija Mia is set for release in March 24 on AVIE records. As an active member in NY’s Downtown Jewish Music Scene, Mor performed with the band Pharaohs Daughter in venues as at the Knitting Factory, Stone, Tonic and recorded for John Zorn Tzadik Label.

Born in the oldest standing synagogue in New York, THE SHUL BAND plays Jewish music with exuberant virtuosity. Rooted in Jewish folk music but drawing on the musical wellsprings of New York City and the whole wide world, the quintet and their musical friends aspire to transcend their sources and create compelling, moving music with every performance. From Klezmer to Kashmir, liturgical melodies to Israeli dances, THE SHUL BAND is equally prayerful and raucous, meditative and joyful. Featuring musicians from the United States, Mexico, and Colombia, The Shul Band is a true downtown New York City ensemble equally at home on the concert stage, the synagogue, or playing Jewish wedding horas. The Shul Band was most recently the musical headliner of the first annual Borscht Belt Festival in the Catskill Mountains of New York and was featured in a National Public Radio story about the festival. Also in 2023, The Shul Band was commissioned by TheLast Frontier arts organization to collaborate on a rooftop program with Sufi dancers in Brooklyn, NY. Other performances include Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, The Angel Orensanz Foundation, Most Arts Center (London), Le Poisson Rouge, the Israeli Day Parade, Ellis Island, and The Sembrich Museum in Lake George, NY.
